Magnetic Board Game
Make your own boardgame with post-it notes on the fridge. Let your little people choose a winding path that looks good to them. Then use a Sharpie to write whatever you are currently practicing at home.
When it is your turn, flip a coin. For heads, move ahead 2 spaces. For tails, move ahead one space. First one to the end wins. You do not move ahead for wrong answers. Use fridge magnets as game pieces.
One of their favorite parts was when I would get the answer wrong on purpose. If they caught me before they flipped the coin, I had to stay back. That way, they checked every. single. answer. It also keeps you from beating them several times in a row which makes them less likely to keep trying.
We offer a small prize to the winner—like a jellybean or a sticker…or bragging rights.
We have used this game to learn shapes, letters, read aloud words, addition and multiplication facts, vocabulary, parts of a plant cell, Spanish conversation, clap out musical rhythms, review history facts, practice mental math, you name it.
You can also laminate paint chips and put magnets on them, but this is an awful lot easier.
