Lunch as Learning

Lunch doesn’t look like this everyday. But, since it was pretty, I took a picture. This is what we call “every man for himself” which is my system for lunches around here. When they were young, we learned food groups. We practiced sorting the things in the fridge and pantry into groups. We looked at the things on our plate and tried to assign the different foods to different food groups. And then, I pitched my best food idea EVER!

Here are the lunch rules: Everybody needs to choose 1 reasonable serving of each of the following:

After those are eaten, you can fill up on whatever other food you would like to have. All your dishes should be washed out and go in the sink.

A lot of the time, this is a ham and cheese sandwich, banana and baby carrots. Sometimes it is yogurt with part of an orange, lettuce and some Doritos. Sometimes it is peanut butter crackers with a strawberry smoothie and leftover green beans. I’m not picky. Sometimes the vegetable is spaghetti sauce. Sometimes it is eaten on a napkin.

But, every day, with no effort from me, they choose what they have agreed to eat and they practice food groups and reasonable servings. Don’t take this from me. It may be my single greatest victory.
