Gummy Math

Fruit Snacks are the bane of dentists everywhere! And, we don’t have them often. But, every Friday, for all of Kindergarten, we had what we call “Gummy Math”…and then we practiced brushing our teeth.

Take the contents of 2 packages of multi-flavor fruit snacks and lay them on the table or on your math mat. Sort the snacks by color or type first. Then, use your imagination.

If you add the purple and red fruit snacks, how many do you have all together? If I eat two orange fruit snacks, how many will I have left? What does that number sentence look like?

If I lined up the red fruit snacks and the orange fruit snacks, how many red fruit snacks wouldn’t have a partner? That means, how many more red fruit snacks do I have than orange fruit snacks? We usually ask questions, eating a couple at a time for each subtraction problem until all the fruit snacks are gone.
